Universities of Applied Sciences
The universities of applied sciences ("Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften - Fachhochschulen") provide a more practice-oriented course. Students serve work-placement semesters. And in their dissertation they concern themselves above all with concrete questions arising from the work situation. The professors have career experience in addition to their academic qualifications, and they will pass the benefits of both on to their students.
The programmes cover engineering, business administration, social work, computer science, information science for business and a range of degree programmes in innovative sectors such as new technologies, life sciences, media and design. Universities of applied sciences also play a major role in continuing vocational training, offering postgraduate degree courses and advanced training courses.
