Universities in Bavaria

High educational standards

Bavarian universities offer both students and staff high educational standards and a wide range of academic choices. Bavaria is regarded as one of the scientific and technological centres of Europe boasting first-class research institutes, universities and colleges. In recent decades, Bavaria has developed to a first-rate international location for science and research. Bavaria's universities have been and continue to be a major source of innovation and progress. They enjoy an excellent reputation. In fact, Bavarian universities are regularly at the top of nationwide rankings.

Internationalisation

As a result of the globalisation of the world's economy and the merging of markets, mobility has become an indispensable asset for students and lecturers alike. With knowledge being exchanged worldwide - not least as a result of the new media -, universities and institutions of research are more and more dependent on international co-operation to fulfil their role as catalysts for Bavaria's scientific and business community.

That is why Bavarian universities find themselves in a dynamic process of modernisation and internationalisation. Their international approach makes Bavarian universities attractive for students from abroad. They have established about 3,800 partnerships and co-operations with foreign universities and colleges in 123 countries. The proportion of students from abroad studying in higher education now stands at approx. 10 %. The international offices dealing with matters concerning foreign students, the so-called Akademische Auslandsämter, work closely with the authorities responsible for the registration of foreign nationals, so that questions relating to immigration and residence permits are clarified quickly and in good time.

It is of particular benefit to many international students that Bavaria's universities are increasingly offering both Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes and lectures and seminars in English pdf.

EU-programmes

Numerous students of Bavarian universities spend one or more semesters studying abroad. Year after year, thousands of students from Bavaria take advantage of the opportunities provided by the EU's educational programme ERASMUS for studying elsewhere in Europe. At the same time, numerous lecturers from Bavaria go to other European countries every year.

Many students and graduates at Bavarian universities are interested in jobs and internships abroad. For this reason, we offer a guideline listing international organisations as well as institutions of the European Union, including links to the respective institution. This guideline is available only in German: Leitfaden "International arbeiten: in- und außerhalb Bayerns pdf" (pdf 90 KB).

Andrassy-University Budapest

One special innovation is the Andrassy University in Budapest , a German-speaking university that was opened in fall 2002 with the support of the Bavarian State Ministry in co-operation with Hungary, Baden-Württemberg, Austria and Switzerland. This university enables graduates from the countries stated and from Hungary's Central European and Eastern European neighbours to take part in a two-year postgraduate degree course in the fields of international relations, comparative political science and law, and Central European studies.
